Loved your story! I'm a big fan of vw cars but for that reliability reason I've never considered buying one. I love, love, love my xD though. It's paid off and I'll more than likely keep it with me for a very long time
As stated to your question, Yes the temp light will be on until it warms just drive it normal (not racing it) until the light goes out and you are fine. Normally go out within a mile or so depending on outside temp.
