I'd say its prolly easy for someone with no tech/mech auto skills to get the locations mixed up. especially if he comes from another car that he changed the air filter on himself and always had the upright horizontal filter box (most cars do, including ours) vs this car's which is hidden away down in the fender well.

funny as hell none the less
