yea vvtl-i workrs the same way i-vtec works.

our motor has dual vvt-i so we get timing profiles on intake an exhaust, not just on the intake side. hooray for good gas mileage.

vtec is cool, but running around screaming "i got v-tec!!!!!!" isnt lol.

toyota and nissan just add extra cylinders and speed snails from the factory for their "performance" cars, which is what i'd do
