I installed a cabin air filter in my xD the day I brought it home from the dealership. 13 months later, I just changed it and decided to make a how-to video for those who might be a little intimidated by car stuff. It is really easy... and you'll be amazed at how filthy the filter was after a year.

I've replaced mine twice so far. It's amazing how dirty they get since they don't come with one and Scion doesn't even acknowledge that their cars even use them.

No kidding... I'm thinking of replacing mine every 6 months from now on.

Would this account for the strange smell that comes through when I turn on the AC in the summer after the car has sat for awhile? Or would that be an issue regarding the fan?

That's usually mildew growing in the system. Bringing in a bunch of dirt, leaves, etc doesn't help. The biggest problem is water that condenses on the AC evaporator. The evaporator is treated to be anti-microbial, but mildew will still grow in the system. You want to make sure the AC drain is clear. Dirt can build up and clog the drain. Also, you might want to start turning the AC off a few minutes before you get home, but leave the fan on. That will help dry it out, too.

This is such a common problem that there is a product made to solve it. It is a spray called Frigifresh. To use it, you need to be able to get at the evaporator. Most shops that do it drill a hole near the evaporator and spray it in, then plug the hole.

Using a cabin filter will help prevent dirt and organic matter from building up in there... so it will be beneficial to you.

you can also spray the cleaner stuff into the AC intake vent on the hood cowl, while running the AC... that usually helps.
